I don't have Killing Floor :s

... I THOUGHT YOU DID. I swear I saw your squiddly face in the steam library page for it...

I've played it during free weekends a few times, maybe that's what happened.

There's no friction between the table and the block, so there's nothing countering the weight of the hanging block, right?  Unless I'm being stupid and missing something obvious.

The heavy block is at a ground state, which means that the system won't move.

Seriously, do a physical experiment and see what happens.

I think it's more that the heavy one is on the table and the light one is hanging off the table, and is so dragging the heavy one towards the edge at whatever acceleration.

That's only if the heavy one isn't directly suspended by the cord, which it says nothing about in the problem--you'd need the angle between the cord and the table.

Rather disappointing that it was just briefly locked and not deleted altogether. I'd much rather have a fresh start with a new thread that wasn't dedicated to roleplaying domestic animals.
You know, we could make one of those too.

Things that made you MEW today!

Here's a shitty MSPaint diagram to explain what I mean.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's how I interpret the question, assuming the pulley was placed so the angle between the two stretches of cord was 90 degrees.

Well, yeah, clearly in reality it wouldn't do that.  But... with 0 friction?  I'm just not sure where the opposing force is coming from.

And yeah, that diagram's how I imagined it...

That's how I was interpreting the problem too. This was posted online and the image that was supposed to be with the problem doesn't show up

There already is one.

A'mews'ingly, how I feel about this is very on-topic.

I imagined it as the ropes being parallel.  Normally there's no pulley in the problem, otherwise--you don't need a pulley for that diagram, do you?

Buck up friendo, we're all on the level here.
I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Well, uh... pulleys are just awesome, apparently.

Come to think of it, you wouldn't need them at all in a world without friction.

Physics homework is giving me some problems, and I don't quite get the book's explanation of these problems

Spoiler: For those interested (click to show/hide)

422 N = (422/9.8)
Downward force of 185 N is acting on a mass of ((422 + 185) / 9.8) kg
F = ma
185 = ((422 + 185) / 9.8) * a
a = 185 / ((422 + 185) / 9.8) = 2.99 m/s/s

I think?  I haven't done this shit in years.

I imagined it as the ropes being parallel.  Normally there's no pulley in the problem, otherwise--you don't need a pulley for that diagram, do you?
Spoiler: Thought it was this (click to show/hide)

I can practically guarantee the ropes are perpendicular, not parallel.  It's a stock problem for basic physics.

Well, now I see the problem.  The lighter block is suspended out in the air for no reason.  Shouldn't it be banging up against the other block?

The questions states the pulley as being on the edge of the table.
