...what the...??
If you're surprised by this, you must not read my sad thread posts very often.

Probably not. This thread gets a lot of posts and I don't frequent it often enough to really keep track of much. And far too many people here seem to have crazy/abusive parents. :(

My condolences regardless.

Someday I'll get an Irish Wolfhound and it'll be the biggest dog to make up for all the dogs I never got to have. But it's a pipe dream for now and the forseeable future.
Just... get a mutt for your first dog. Or two. Or five. Or all of them. They tend to last live longer, have less health problems, and have better personalities than purebreds. I've had both and, well. The mutts have had a better record. Not to say the purebreds did badly -- I've had some excellent ones, over the years -- but the mutts did better on all counts.
Most likely will, unless I'm extremely lucky with future living arrangements. IWs are my dream dogs but they're notoriously short-lived and take a lot of...everything. Space, food, money.

Apart from that, though, I'd take a beautiful mutt over any other purebred breed.
On that note, adopt disabled kitties. Nobody else will. Seriously, if you have the choice between a perfectly normal, well adjusted cat, and a cat with one eye, the one eyed cat will always love you more in the end.

I'm seriously dreading tomorrow.

Everything about today up till the ending bits should of been a perfect recipe for a good night and a great weekend. Things aren't going that way anymore.

Unfortunately, I'm way too aware that how tomorrow goes is entirely out of my hands.

Better yet, many internet nerdlords know.

Good luck!

There's a cat shelter in rome that takes in cats like this. We went there while we were visiting the city, and it has some of the nicest cats you've ever met (and also the highest percentage of three-legged, one-eyed, one-eared cats I've ever seen).

Reading Lord of the Flies. Remind me again, why is this being advocated as a school setwork book? Shall we do A Song of Ice and Fire next?

LotF isn't grimdark for the sake of being grimdark.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

LotF isn't grimdark for the sake of being grimdark.
ASoIaF operates on what amounts to a "reverse narrative casualty" principle, I think, where everyone we sympathise with fails horribly and villains succeed. I blame it on Martin getting fed up with LoTR ripoffs and deciding to write his own fantasy, with blackjack and whores.

As for Lord of the Flies, that book put me into depression for a month. I still try not to think about it too much.

I am sometimes deeply grateful that I can detach my emotional investments quite easily. It makes a lot of things easier.

It's not what happens to the characters, it's the overall message that humans are horrible bastards.
