Dwarf Therapist needs talented pixel jockeys!
« on: October 08, 2009, 11:22:08 pm »

Greetings!

There have been more and more requests lately for iconification of data in Dwarf Therapist. Being 98% programmer and about 2% artist, I will spare my users from attempting to draw my own. I was hoping to kidnap an intrepid artist from the forum who wouldn't mind helping make DT a little nicer to look at.

We do have a lot of talented artists on the boards, and a lot of talented programmers. They just don't seem to work together very often. There are a lot of mods, tile-sets, and utils, and I'd like to kick off some more collaboration.

First up, I just got "current job / idle detection" working for the next release of DT. Here's a teaser shot of my placeholder icons... The shopping cart means a "hauling" job :)
Spoiler: "Bad Icons" (click to show/hide)

To save precious h-scroll space, in this version I have decided not to show the exact job text such as "construct iron cabinet", but just instead loosely group these actions into something like "making" which is then represented as a single icon.

So far I have a need of icons for the following.
 * IDLE
 * DIG
 * REST
 * DRINK
 * FOOD
 * BUILD
 * HAUL
 * ADMIN

Most jobs users would care to see would fit into one of those categories. The default grid cell size if 16px by 16px. PNG with transparency is preferred, but other formats can work.

So any interest?

While this is technically Programmer art I think it will be a good start.  I have 9 icons based off the Dystopia Rhetoric graphics set.  I added a 'Break' icon as I made a 'Rest' Icon which is clearly sleep (with Z's and everything).  The dwarves have strong primary colors which helps to identify them, I made Idle yellow so it would match the color it appears in DF and be easy to spot.  The icons might look best on a black background as their are several white parts.  If you need changes just give me the word.

Sounds good! Where can I find it? :)

I'm thinking maybe the idlers shouldn't have a dwarf graphic, maybe just a single dot or something so they jump out at you more. But overall I think these icons work fairly well. I just don't know if I like it. We have a full 16x16 to show what they are doing, and using a dwarf for part of that sort of confuses the message. For instance eating could be an icon of just a chicken leg etc... And they would be easier to tell what they are.

Here's a screenshot using the provided icons...

A simpler symbol would probably be better. Those dwarves just don't seem to fit into DTs look.

Yeah I agree. But it's going to be tough that find icons that convey the current job and all look similar. Which is why I was hoping to attract an amazing artist from our talent pool here :)

How about these? The background colour's not right but it's 5am and I can't be bothered to find the right one. Hopefully you can tell what they are (admin book, haul bag, build wall, eat drumstick, mine pick, drink barrel, rest sleeping-dorf, idle ?)

Ahh some more to play with. Thanks guys!

Also my wife has recommended the Reddit alien as the best icon for idle. :)

I was bored, and made some icons myself:

 * IDLE
 * DIG
 * REST
 * DRINK
 * FOOD
 * BUILD
 * HAUL
 * ADMIN

Use them or not, it was fun enough to make them

Also, an exclamation mark for strange moods would be fitting (particularly since they flash an exclamation point in the game).

Nobles a sparkling gem.

Children I guess could just be idle, or maybe a stuffed dwarf toy if someone can manage it.

Maybe a gear for other tasks (e.g. dyeing, clothing, farming), regardless of what job they are performing?
