No extra time, why am I on this forum?
« on: October 03, 2009, 02:08:13 pm »

Psycological question, I have friends, I have school which to follow, I have so many things I could do instead of letting my life pass by me while browsing forums, exhaling many many liters of CO2 into the air due to computer use.

Why?

Why am I here on this forum, why am I not doing other things, for example my homework? Why won't I go outside to do stuff?

What do you guys do when you are not on this forum?

Heh. 'There is freedom here.' Ironic that due to there being freedom here, you don't seem to be free to leave. At least, not without some distress from Internet Withdrawal.

Internet withdrawal is indeed very distressing... We had ours go out for over 24 hours a few months ago... Without steam half my games didn't even work. I found myself trying to log in to WoW or play E:TW only to look on mournfully as some permutation of the message "Connection could not be found" appeared.  :'(

I noticed that I'm on this forum more when I have less time. When I have a lot of things to do, I don't even consider being here.

A postgraduate explained it to me last week. I forgot the exact term for it, but when we're stumped, we sometimes do nothing. E.g. most people when confused scratch their heads. When you're stumped, like stuck on a math question or something you can't find the solution to, you have two options:
1. Keep trying.
2. Look somewhere else for the solution.

Since both of these options go in opposite directions, the human mind decides to do.. nothing. People call it procrastination, but it's not really, since you don't want to procrastinate.

so Angellus is on this forum because of what we call procrastination; but is really avoiding something at which he fails over the desire to do it better?

This really sounds both psycological and like fysics :)

Any idea's on what to do when procrastination happens? (Or is it only self-solvable?)

Heh, I got that from a physics postgraduate. Well, the best thing to do is to do something. Start doing your homework, just keep doing it until you're 95% sure you can't. Then look through a textbook for the solution. Don't look on the internets, internet is evil.

The worst possible thing you could do is "something else to relax". You end up cleaning your room, checking your email, socializing, whatever, justify it as something good, and don't really accomplish anything.

Really, I shouldn't be around either. I have late gov essays to do.

I just had an idea, a guaranteed cold turkey bay 12 method. You change your password to something simple, then give it to someone trustworthy (like the Baron). They change your password to something else, and you can't post! Then in a week or so, the accomplice can change it to something else predetermined and you can post again, hopefully having beaten the addiction.

I don't really think password-escrow is the answer here.

In fact, if I were to do that I would just end up browsing without being logged in, or go play df or something

Even I spend way too much time here, when I really should be doing something else.

And leaving escrow in my hands is a terrible idea, because I'm lazy and forgetful enough to destroy the whole thing.  It would be an interesting experiment though.
