Fun(read; sad, depressing) fact; if you go to the Midwestern US like Iowa and ask for a hamburger, or you will be served slices of cold deli cut ham on a hamburger bun. You have to ask for a cheeseburger, no cheese, if you want a real hamburger without cheese.

Because midwesterners are culinary (among other forms of) heretics and should never be allowed in a kitchen.

Only sometimes. Sometimes it's just whatever ends up in the grinder, which may or may not be ham.

Seriously though it's cause the preparation method more or less originated in hamburg, somewhere-in-europe. It's like swiss cheese or summat, not anything to do with pork.

Also note a nice slab of ham in a burger burn is still pretty good. Deli ham's fine, too, even cold. It's all sammich in the end.

Ew...  I mean, I have always loved Arby's "pile of sliced beef in a bun" burgers Roast Beef Sandwiches.  But as someone who loves cold cuts, they are very different from burgers.  Burgers must be warm even if that's the only real difference.

People are serious about them.

I'm not going to lie, if someone tried to pass off something on a hamburger bun as a biscuit I might try to hurt them. It could potentially cause a small riot in the areas I've lived in. Ham biscuits are delicious but a biscuit is something pretty specific in terms of sammich making.

Sounds like somebody heard the abbreviation "burger" for the original "hamburger" derived from the name of the German city of Hamburg and assumed a "hamburger" was just a "burger" made with ham.

Young'un me actually thought that's what it was for a while.

"Hamburger" being a beef burger is the default.  Cheese is common but optional, and generally makes it a cheeseburger.  You're fine.

I picture it tasting like my shoes, based on the history of desperation.

Edit: Though I am blessed to have a family which sometimes provides me with venison from deer, and it is tough but delicious.
