A DND club started in high school the year after I graduated, so my brother is able to play it and maybe learn how to GM a game, then maybe his friends and I could play a game

Sounds to me like he wasn't a very good teammate.

Rpgaming with strangers is a bit of a hazard like that. You never know whether you're going to get a group where everybody understands that you're not supposed to play the game against each other.

...Unless you're playing Paranoia.

You can get toxic groups of players, especially at highschool. A good barometer for that is actually the attitude of the DM. A bad or abusive DM can pick on people, or in some cases they're friends with one of the abusive players, and effectively let them get away with bullying the other players.

Being a DM can be a power trip for some people. If you get a "loudest in the group" type (not the fun type of loud) who isn't that smart they may become an abusive fellow player, but if they're smart enough they'll position themselves as DM, and use that to get off on having power over the players as a whole

You may be able to tell these types pretty easily. This is just my take, but in good DM'ing you take the players actions, and you related back to the players the effect that their choices have on the story and the world, but the bad DMs I've had tend to only focus on the story only in so far as it causes stuff to happen to the players, and it generally happens in ways that limit the actions you can take.

The best way to weed out bad DMs is as early as possible. Do something unexpected like not following the plot rails. Good DMs will roll with that, but bad DMs tend to spit the dummy. If you go off the rails, or try and convince other players to go off the rails, a bad DM may contrive to make the world "punish" you, as retaliation for breaking their carefully planned adventure. Personally, I'd rather find that out sooner than later. If they're that petty it'll come out eventually.
