It’s a number sign though. I have only ever encountered it being called the pound sign in America, because America, apparently.

It was used for the weight pounds (lb kinda turns into # when tryin to simpify writing strokes without overlap of existing symbols) if following a number, and number sign if before a number, #6 weight was 3# and so forth apparently and at least in the us when you'd make a call and need to do various instructions for shit like the old weather lines, moviephone, and general customer service stuff you would usually hear shit like "please press pound to..." tossed in there.

Sharps are notated with ♯, not #. In my glorious republic, it's always been called a hash, or remained nameless.

Y'wanna know what "hashtag", in the sense of being a category or topic indicator, is technically translated to in Norwegian?

Emneknagg.

Nobody actually uses this word, either in speech or in writing... We just say "hashtag" as though it were a Norwegian word, much as we do with a number of English phrases.

And yeah, I grew up with it both as "pound sign" and as "hash tag", growing up in the US with a programmer for a father.

Shook

"pound sign"
IDLIKESOMPOOOOUNDCAKE

I've heard it as hashtag, "square" and uh, "steak". The latter two in danish, so "firkant" and "bøf". :V

This is obviously because steak is a square meal.

English sheds a single tear of pride at babby thief language's word larceny. Keep it up, one day you'll be as linguistically muddled as english is~

The hilarity, of course, is that English is partly as muddled as it is thanks to Scandinavian influences.

We're going full dumb circle.

There's actually an old Norwegian pop song that specifically tries to cram as much Norwegian-English into the lyrics as possible, but I'm having a dickens of a time finding the damn thing now.

We haven’t done that until an English word that came from an archaic Norwegian word gets reintroduced into modern Norwegian parlance. :P
