Funny enough, other than wearing my hair long I actually look and dress like that; at some point I just spent so much time in lab I felt weird not wearing gloves and a coat, and wearing all black is just one less decision I have to make during the day.

That does partly explain some of the jokes made at my expense, though. Apparently "I have confidence in our capacity to engineer our way out of anything unfortunate we might accidentally engineer our way into and considerable doubt about whether we can afford not to try" is not an optimal response to a question about the risks of retrovirally deployed gene drives.

No I understand that you feel your work regarding feline gingivitis is extremely important to human society, but Great Britain had 60 million people in it.

It sounds farcical, but there's only so many times you can go "oh, wait, actually doing this would fundamentally reshape the global economy/cause a significant existential crisis" before you have to ask whether there isn't a moral imperative to do something drastic and beneficial before some self-destructive bit of evolutionary baggage drives someone to do something tediously destructive with it.
