I've been reunited with one of my favourite books, The Walrus And The Warwolf. I'm not sure how many times I've read it, but just tonight I started re-reading it again and I was just sitting here with a huge smile on my face. Now, though, it's time to get some sleep.

Happy Birthday, Derm!

Happy birthday, Dermonster!

Ever since I did a 2 hour hike last week I've been restless, practically on edge.  It's only fixed by more hiking.  My legs are sore and my feet are mildly blistered, but I feel healthy and energetic.  I don't understand where this is coming from (been eating healthier recently...) but it reminds me of when I was truly athletic and fit.  It's only inconvenient because work finally started coming in again, and in force - heck, maybe that's the reason :P

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Man that was forever ago. I bet if I went through it right now it'd look really shitty. I'd like to think I got better since then but I am unsure.

Been reading up stuff on the second punic war.
Some humorous little bits - like:

Scipio got assigned the Sicilian garrison, which was a 'punishment' gig. Fortunately, that meant that it was crewed by tons of veterans of various roman calamities - giving him a core force consisting mostly of highly motivated, highly experienced troops.

He needed more horsemen, so he conscripted the Sicilian nobles into an equites unit. They complained, so he said they could avoid the levy, if they paid for the horse, weapons, and men to replace them.

By this time, Hannibal Barca had crossed the alps and invaded Italy - So Scipii, being the wonderful man he was, turned and... immediately invaded Africa.

He came across the enemy army of Carthaginian and African troops. Rather than fighting them, he snuck into their camp at night, set it on fire and killed the rest.
40000 casualties for almost zero roman losses.

This opened the way to Carthage, which he then set siege to, causing them to recall Hannibal. Problem solved.

I like history.

Read up on the Stratagemata, the hilarity and tactical genius contained within is well worth it. My all time favourite has to be when one of the Greek generals got the biggest, buffest and tallest man in his army with long black hair to stand beneath a sacred grove of the enemy's atop a gilded chariot with the best and largest war horses of his army, decreeing that he was favoured by the Gods. The enemy went home without a fight.
