Wait, no. I like the *concept* of fanfiction. Harkens back to the whole oral story telling tradition of taking stories you were told as a kid and passing them on, changing them and such-like as you want. Only there's a written record of all the different stories so people can take any damn one they want to embellish instead of only the single one THEY heard. Plus historians.

Why? Unless they start claiming it's theirs, it's still their way of saying they enjoy it. Or they're making fun of you. Which isn't worth getting mad about.

GRRM hates fanfiction, and I have never understood that. Some of my favorite works of writing are fanfics. But then again, that's just me. Hurray for being different!

Defacing the author's creations and twisting them to fulfil their own twisted desires. Gosh, now I'm getting angry just on behalf of this hypothetical author. I don't understand how anyone could not see why an author might object to this.

For me, it depends on the writing in question. Something like Game of Thrones? Yeah, okay, it doesn't cotton well to fanfiction and most would just be straight-up porn. But something a bit more light-hearted, why the fuck shouldn't there be fanfics? It's a mark of a good story, where the setting and the characters capture a reader so much that they imagine their own stories, and then begin to write them. I'm not saying you shouldn't get mad about it, not my business, but that's what I think of fanfics.

Beeeecause your stories are still there, sitting pretty, not tarnished at all? It's not like they're literally writing the fanfic on the manuscripts of your stories, destroying them utterly with it...

And how about worlds that are limited by the age of their main audience? Things like Pokemon are never gonna go much above the PG level in the official material, simply because that's what age they are aimed at. Yet the worlds they are set in often have tons of potential for darker stories that will never be filled in due to that limitation, and I can totally see (and appreciate) stories that fill in those gaps.

On the other hand, 99% of fanfiction I've seen is trash, and admittedly if I were an author I would feel really weird about people taking my ideas and twisting them into anatomically flawed gay erotica and breeding grounds for overly perfect OCs.

To be fair, I've looked at a lot of the free ebooks on Amazon. They're trash, too. But at the end of the day, you lose nothing when people make fanfiction of your work. People don't make money off fanfiction. The arrogance of squawking "No! No! Mine work! No touch!" would actually encourage me to make my first fanfiction of that work: perhaps a anatomically flawed smut piece between out-of-character-acting characters and mary-sue inserts.
