Take a look at, say, LotR.
Alright?

I'm not seeing much reflection of the contents of the story there. If I didn't know about LotR before that cover would tell me exactly nothing. Not much excitement, for that matter either. So it's neither informative nor making it look interesting.
Wait. Wait. Wait. They put the two towers on every book not titled The Two Towers? WHAT ARE YOU THINKING PUBLISHER

EDIT: Also, eggnog makes me happy. Also, since I can't remember having snails before, I got myself some of those and tossed them up with some pasta and garlic butter. Very tasty, and taken care of one of my behemoths for this month.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

If there was, it's going to be the last of it's kind, because it sure ain't having children now.

Yes
It also depends on which story you want to hear for it's back ground
I was told the one involving pyramids of cannon balls on brass bases (brass monkeys) and it getting cold enough that the brass contracted and the cannon balls fell off
It's absolute horse crap but still a fun phrase to say

I'd say that judging a book by its cover depends more on the quality of the artwork on the cover as opposed to the content. Something like the lord of the rings books may not be an exciting cover, but the quality would cause me to look deeper. On the other hand something like this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Tells me right off the bat that I'm probably not going to enjoy the book too much, simply because it's such a low quality picture. A high-quality, restrained cover can tell me tons more then a low quality busy one. And true, judging by covers is mostly a way to filter out the chaff instead of identify the wheat, but it still saves tons of time in the long run.
That's a bit unfair. Cover art is the responsibility/hallmark of the publisher rather than the author. And prior to the 1980's, publishers didn't spend shit on cover art so even some wonderful books got really crappy cover art.

Brassonkey is also, apparently, an artwork/tourist junk baught from japan/china. It's usually three statues (or one statue with three monkeys) made of brass and depicting the three wise monkeys

It is early January here, and it is warm enough during the day to walk around in short-sleeve shirts. Even as night comes on, it only really gets cold sometime between midnight and early morning.

California, ladies and gentlemen and those who identify as neither or both of the above. Good old California.
