That's incidental. Any book published in the last century or so will have a cover that attempts to attract people to read it. No-one's going to buy a book that looks boring.
I must be pretty old then since I just took a cursory look around my books and probably the majority of them are only a stylistic design that is related to the content of the book, not exciting looking in the slightest. A few are "action shots" and the rest are either unadorned or illustrations/photos of something related to the book, but even those are mostly not really exciting.

To the people who buy that type of book, perhaps stylistic designs are what attracts them.

Feeling a lot better today. Still not good (sick, PTSD, etc.) but I do feel better.

That is good. :)

My own happy is that I have a carton of Monster Energy... some weird new flavour of it, at least, but hey it was six bucks. Whee.

Alright?

I'm not seeing much reflection of the contents of the story there. If I didn't know about LotR before that cover would tell me exactly nothing. Not much excitement, for that matter either. So it's neither informative nor making it look interesting.

I'd say that judging a book by its cover depends more on the quality of the artwork on the cover as opposed to the content. Something like the lord of the rings books may not be an exciting cover, but the quality would cause me to look deeper. On the other hand something like this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Tells me right off the bat that I'm probably not going to enjoy the book too much, simply because it's such a low quality picture. A high-quality, restrained cover can tell me tons more then a low quality busy one. And true, judging by covers is mostly a way to filter out the chaff instead of identify the wheat, but it still saves tons of time in the long run.

tbh, that book looks awesome, I wonder if I can get it on Kindle. I bet it was written in the 70s too.
