That's the first time I can remember him botching a helicopter landing without getting shot down first.  Usually he'll land in some tiny enclosed base like its an open field.

I don't think that's what happened. At 8:25 he takes shots that kill the engine (you can see the indicator go red and an airflow speed warning indicator pop up; at that point the Littlebird was basically a slightly aerodynamic rock). Possibly clipped the rotors on that guardtower a bit later, but he was already going down.
