This is what I was under the impression was happening, with the talk of an introduction.

To answer your first, no, because there were none. I just decided to stop lurking without an account and appeared out of the blue to give my two cents on a story. But it's still a nice gesture.

If that had happened to me on my first day, it would have been weird.
