Our cat came back!
She disappeared sometime yesterday evening, and I realized she was actually missing earlier today. A search all over the house and yard revealed nothing, and tomorrow I was to call the animal control offices, see if they had picked her up. But tonight, as I walked around to make sure everything was locked up, I heard a meowing outside and there she was, a little hungry but no worse for the wear.
So yes, you could say that the cat came back the very next day.
She got an extra-big portion of food :3
