(Also, another in what I am coming to call Taiwan Moments: There existed the buoys and rope for an anti-jellyfish net, but only upon swimming out to the edge of it and seeing fish around me did I come to discover that there was NO NET included in this arrangement. I know the killer species of box jellyfish doesn't come up to Taiwan, but the rest aren't exactly peachy...)

I've never been into Tohou, since the gameplay makes me spontaneously start crying at the mere thought of its conception, but I was into TF2 back in the day, and both have dedicated bases for similar reasons: Funny snippets and memes, redonkulous challenge of bullet hell that some people love, single-gender populations for easy shipping and cuteness for people into that sorta' thang', but above all, deep, well-written characterization in two genres (Shoot Em' Ups/FPSs respectively) that normally forsake plot or development for the sake of pure gameplay.

For what it's worth, I got into Touhou for a radically different reason then everyone else did; It has a Pokemon hack that lets you use a medium tank, a humongous mecha, and guided missles as mons, merely because they were minor characters in the series, leading to some crazy-arse scenarios where a fourteen foot tall mech is mashing little girls to paste, and said little girl is a dopplegangar to the shrine maiden that just sent her out.

There's also fun to be found in trying to wring out lore from all the supplementary materials (which is a lot, as fanstuff=lore until proven otherwise by Zun), leaving a lot of room for interpretation, and storytelling.

Of note, the hardest boss in the Touhou series isn't even a loli; it's a cybernetic demonic war-machine that is piloted by a loli, and it fires less bullets then the vast majority of other bosses.

Oh, and on the music, man. U.N.O.W.E.N is just the bread and butter, there's gems hidden throughout the whole series, especially the PC-98 games.

Yeah, it wasn't emphasized enough. Touhou games have some bloody spectacular musical pieces composed by a man with no formal training. The music is good enough that it's listenable as a standalone even in the original blaring midi horns.
