Quote from: 19.
Now, beating the game will depend on how I play to Ivy League politicians who think a gun is something you hang over your mantlepiece to be occasionally dusted by the maid in your Connecticut summer home. And, when it comes to that point in the game where this panel demands the truth (and says they're "entitled" to the truth) I want a little drop-down menu that will let me tell them that they, in fact, can't handle the truth.

With a couple of clicks (or maybe a hotkey), I'll tell them that we live in a world that has walls and that those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. I will tell them that I have a greater responsibility than they can possibly fathom. They weep for mistreated prisoners and curse the military. They have that luxury. They have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that the naked human pyramid and homoerotic torture, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to them, saves lives.

I'll tell them that they don't want the truth, because deep down, in places they don't talk about at parties, they want me on that wall. They need me on that wall. I'll tell them that I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to men who rise and sleep under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then question the manner in which I provide it.

I'd rather they just said "thank you" and went on their way. Otherwise, I'd suggest they pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what they think they're entitled to.

This made me laugh uncontrollably.

Like, seriously, hahahah

I'm pretty sure by "faceless mooks" kaikai meant the practice of hiding peoples' faces behind masks or full helmets when they're "evil" mooks to dehumanise them and make the viewer not feel conflicted when the "hero" mows down person after person wihout guilt or even reflection. It's even more grating in modern movies as "heroes" can cause any destruction that would logically kill and injure dozens or hundreds of people but it doesn't matter because it's happening off screen.

That trope could just means they lack individual identity. For human actors in live-action, mostly this means masks, but for e.g. cartoon or video-game humans, or for non-humans in fiction like orcs or aliens, they can all just "look the same". this can even be at play in novels, e.g. the goblins in The Hobbit novel are hardly drawn with any personal detail: they're the nameless/faceless horde of "the other" who only exist to be mowed down.

I doubt Kaijuu was specifically saying we should ban masks.

Yeah not specifically masks.

Mostly re: flying dice's post.

Yeah it'd kill a lot of story types, but maybe that's because those stories have unfortunate implications baked into them. It's true that stories with wars portrayed as black and white would disappear, but I don't see how that could remotely be considered a bad thing. There are no "good" wars in real life ("necessary" at best), and I see no reason to have them in fiction either.

As a side note, you don't really have to characterize everyone to stop the problem. You just have to get rid of using huge generalizations as justification for killing them without remorse. I don't care if the hero beats up a guard without contemplating about the guard's family/etc; I do care if the hero kills them and spits on their corpse without doing so.

Of all things, western comic books seem to be the best at avoiding this problem, since most heroes actually portrayed as good seem to do their best to not kill or unnecessarily maim people. There are plenty of neutral or anti-heroes who kill without remorse, but that's also alright because again, it's not portrayed as unquestionably good.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

how about we let people do whatever they want in their fantasies, and for the people who are offended by the others fantasies, we create fantasies that include the lack of existence of the fantasies which offend them on top of what they want to fantasize about?

people are going to want to kill without a second thought because that's what fuels their powertrip. if you want to put an end to that for whichever reason, provide the same people who want a powertrip a better mean of obtaining fuel for it. vOv

Oh you can have whatever fantasies you want; I'm not advocating censorship.

I am going to criticize though. Media is powerful for spreading ideas, and we need to be responsible for what ideas we're presenting. Present whatever you want, but be prepared to defend yourself too.

So much this.

And power fantasies are pretty disgusting, particularly violent ones. That's a level of immaturity we should be trying to move away from, not foster.

Sez the guy with an exploding face from a violent video game as an avatar?

No one cares about the fates of the countless mooks who get killed in the average RTS, save the person controlling those mooks and then only because "aw crap my dudes got killed, gotta make more or I'll lose". So why care when its a power-fantasy game where one dude wipes out a bunch of mooks single-handedly?
