Google Fiber is expanding to Austin, Texas.
I, for one, welcome our Google overlords (provided we have awesome internet everywhere).

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

It's been pointed out that your internet speeds will probably increase even if you don't get Google Fiber. The other ISPs will be desperate to keep customers once the ball really gets rolling.

North Korea is pissed because Google didn't pick Pyongyang. It all makes sense now.

That is... unnervingly plausible.

Nobody's worried about Google becoming the big company that sells everything in the future? D:

I'd nuke the US for 5.8Mb/s.

I already have faster internet, but I'd sure drop the second nuke if somebody else could get that 5.8mb/s upgrade. Slow internet is awful.

5.8mb/s?
Weren't they talking about serving speeds twenty times that?

Nobody's worried about Google becoming the big company that sells everything in the future? D:
I might be if I didn't know what they're selling is a hell of a lot better than what the competition on the market is selling.

Plus google is one of my favourite companies, I'm aware they're not perfect, but they've done a heck of a lot of really nice stuff. Like compiling all that satellite and mapping data into a freely available place or all the other stuff they've done. They also have some pretty reasonable business practices, seriously, compared to nearly every other major corporation out there they're saints.
This probably has something to do with them having cornered the internet advertising/search engine market, which has made them very financially secure. Which I guess is an argument that sometimes free market capitalism really does work out sometimes?

Be reasonable; I'd nuke Arizona for 5.8Mb/s.

They're marginally less malevolent than a lot of their contemporaries. If I'm going to be spied on by a corporate overthing, I'd at least like for it to be polite enough to pretend that it doesn't watch me in the shower sell my late-night browser history to the highest-bidding advertiser.  :-\

Google is still the good guy so far :3

I like the part where they earn all that money without shoving ads in your face.

This. You have NEVER EVER EVER seen an ad for Google. Because Google doesn't NEED adds.

I think sky was talking about how becoming an internet provider might lead to a less ad based revenue stream.
