This is awesome. :)

Ehhh, I keep hearing these jokes but honestly it never feels like that in the games.

Especially the Mario part since Peach is neither Mario's Girlfriend early on in the series (and even now it is debatable) and she never "leaves him" nor is it ever implied that Mario actually kills his enemies (and the fact that King Boo keeps comming back... I think it is safe to assume he just beats enemies up)

Yay! My depressing cynacism ruins everything I could find mildly amusing.

Card has got other problems. Empire, for example, is supposed to focus on how political polarization in general can undo a democracy into an empire, but instead ends up being a right-wing fantasy where good conservative Americans fight the "Progressive Restoration" seeking to destroy the nation with mecha.

Card might have good ideas, but they never make it through his head without going lopsided and terrible.
Oh god I remember that. Ugh.

After hearing so much about this guy, I suddenly don't feel quite as bad about buying Ender's Game and then never getting around to reading it.  Interesting that the person who sold me on it was the most liberal economics professor who ever lived.

It's not that good. It's ok sci-fi. The only reason everyone thinks it is so good is because it is pretty much the only sci-fi book "approved" for reading in US English classes. There is much better stuff out there.

It reminds me that none of my English teachers even knew who Lovecraft was, much less read anything by him.

Also, a video game I would play the crap out of: An RPG type game that takes place in between the first person getting infected in Aliens, and the death of the lasts colonists on LV-426. There are some... Difficulties inherent in this idea, so perhaps it's a different colony of similar size and make up. It would have a few different stages, but I would hope it would be mostly sandbox and as randomized as possible. Also, it would be something of a cross between games like L.A. Noire, where you have to track down clues and figure out the plot, and SS13, where you have to have intense technical knowledge to survive, as well as heavy survival horror elements.

First stage would be pre-contact. Maybe you go around and get acquainted with your fellow crewmembers. This would probably be a pretty RP heavy section. Perhaps this game would be multiplayer, but maybe not. Anyways, you go around and talk to people and figure out how some technical knowledge.

Stage two would be contact. Someone in the colony gets facehugged, and everyone is speculating, trying to figure out what is going on, or worried about their loved one. Perhaps its more than one person even. This part of the game would utilize some more of the L.A. Noire aspects than the technical knowledge, unless you were a surgeon or something. Eventually, the person 'hatches' and that leads into...

Stage three: Active alien infestation. At first, it'd just be 1 alien or very few of them. The colony would still be swarming with people, and everyone would mostly just be concerned with finding the 'little snakes that came out of my loved one' or whatever. Some L.A. Noire aspects would be fading out, and you'd be getting into the whole survival horror part. Slowly, people would be disappearing, and the aliens would be gaining momentum, unless you defeated them. Eventually, people would start hiding, and fighting back. Barricading themselves into 'safe' places, arming up, making makeshift weapons, so on.

Stage four: You against the swarm. All the other people, or just the vast majority of them, are dead or captured, and you are all alone against a swarm of aliens out for your blood. Every room could be your death, every hallway could be where they find you. You'd have to use your technical knowledge of the station to it's fullest, deploy your weapons with maximum efficiency, and use what you learned of the other people on board to acquire what you need to survive. Joe Bob had a shotgun in his closet, but what deck was it on, and which room was his? Well, I hope you remember, because your flamethrower is running out of fuel!

It'd need a lot of fleshing out, but I'd love to play a game like this.

Edit: Also, in Aliens, Ripley gets the powerloader and picks up that box, turns and asks Apone where he wants it. His reply?

Bay12 could only get more awesome for being named after something out of Aliens.

Actually, there are multiple stories of how Bay 12 got its name. There's this one old Bullet Hell shooter where the ship launches from a Bay 12.

I don't think Toady has ever clarified what the true source is.

Anyway Hans, you could probably get what you are looking for out of a heavily edited SS13. Most of what you are describing exists in some form already, SS13 is just usually silly instead of horror. Usually...

I seem to remember being told it was specifically the Aliens one, and I had no reason to doubt the source, so eh.

Getting zapped for an hour -> Vectorgeld+20, about to line up another two or three studies that should pay out somewhat better.

Had impromptu 3-hour RP session, DM told me that my character was his favorite :3

Now, time to make like a sleepysheep.

Had a great day out today. Went to Sydney to catch up with a friend, we ended up seeing Oz the Great and Powerful. Good movie! Also had lunch at Ikea, because apparently there is food at Ikea. I never knew, I thought they just sold well designed furniture. Had the meatballs, horse meat is half decent, for fast food.
