I've come up with an idea for a series of children's novels about an eccentric relative named Uncle Aloysius with a magical hat that allows the wearer to levitate and an overcoat which always has ten guineas and sixpence in the inner pocket no matter how many times you draw from it. I was raised on Edwardian and interwar British children's literature, which of course is where the inspiration from this comes, and I've come up with premises for about a half-dozen books, ranging from the first book, Uncle Aloysius, which is half-novel half series of vignettes, to Uncle Aloysius and the Great Opal, which will be a whodunit, to Uncle Aloysius Goes to Vulcan, about a trip to that planet between the Sun and Mercury everyone thought existed in 1895. Unfortunately one of the things you can't escape in literature of that time period- which I have always found to be both embarrassingly outdated and quaintly charming, if I must be honest- is the somewhat patronizing when not outright racist view of non-Europeans, and I don't think you could really have a complete series about a travelling Victorian uncle if you didn't also have Uncle Aloysius goes to India, Uncle Aloysius in the Wild West and Uncle Aloysius in New Guinee. What to do...

Maybe I could say I found the unpublished manuscripts in my grandfather's attic? But nobody would believe that.

It would be fun to do an affectionate parody of the genre, if only because there's so much you can't really get away with these days...although it would be easier, I think, to do it straight-up. But what's so bizarre is that there's so much in that genre of kid's books that everyone ignores when they read them that there'd be an outcry about today. If I played it really straight, Uncle Aloysius would have pedo subtext, and the overcoat would be a modified cloak he got from a chief in the Congo in gratitude for giving the chief a model railroad.

Also, I think I just adore the genre too much to do a send-up of it. Let's be honest- the social mores of a century's remove notwithstanding, they're some of the best kids' literature ever written: Mary Poppins, Doctor Doolittle, Paddington Bear...
