 Just to the right of the article title there is a link to a Mythbusters video advertisement. The thought of them tackling this was amusing.

I am to be honest. Although they sound like a cool idea, I suspect that that story is more hyperbole, really crappy players, or straight up GM cheating then truth.

Well, considering the author and origin of the article (Roger Moore, and Dragon magazine) I'm giving him the benefit of doubt.
Also, you can do some really horrible stuff with low level mobs. It doesn't take a lvl30 monster to poison the party with stings and such when the same thing can be better achieved by 30 lvl5 humanoids shooting from murder holes and concealed crenelations. You just don't have time to run a search through the room and find the firing slits when getting shot at from all directions, much less fire back.

At level 30 the PCs will be all but immune from what CR 5 things can do. Unless the GM is cheating.

The same principle applies to level 12 PCs and CR 1/3 things.
