1 metre squared is a measurement of length. It's 1m. 1 square metre is a measurement of area. It's 1m^2. Entirely different.

Pretty sure the two meen the same thing

Worlds biggest data base says your wrong, but let's ignore it for the world smartest data base, yep, still area. Sorry, but you are mistaken.

I've had numerous lectures from maths teachers and physics teachers both saying "They're different". Let me put it into algebra.

1 metre squared = (1m)^2
1 square metre = 1(m^2)

Well yea, but for us mere mortals who are still confined to the laws of physics, we are bound to needlessly bicker about the type of a unit.

EDIT: Although no, it is not true either way. It only looks that way, but one is length and the other is area, when in truth they are both area. It shows up more when you use units other then 1.

one square meter: a unit of area.

one meter squared: a square area that's 1 meter to a side.

No your not, they enjoy showing off what they know, not what they don't know!
Ooh snap!

Sorry, I didn't mean it, just thought it was a good call at the time and couldn't let it go. But really, I think you are thinking of 'one squared meters', as opposed to 'one square meter'. Those two are totally different.

You're thinking of a pendant.
That's what I misread it as.

Misreading something today made me happy.

All I know, is the roast beef in this sandwich tessellates perfectly with the bread and it makes me smile

Also pointing out such a glaring error isn't pedantic

However, fifty square metres, or indeed any number other than one, is not that same number of metres squared.
My point being that's I'm a pedant.

That's a pendant.

Fakeedit: Always, always with the ninjas!

But yeah, there is a difference, but only with numbers other than 1; for example, 2 metres squared is four square metres.

WHAT THE SHIT 11 NINJAS

What do you type one char a minute? Did you just make a regular expression to test your post for errors, and that took time? How can you get 11 ninjas?
