Sat up 'til half four last night having an incredibly random chat, then slept in 'til twelve. This makes me inexplicably happy.

Long, relaxing twenty-four hour day, with no end in sight.  I'm too sick to do much of anything but sit around, so I stayed home from work, but every time I think I'm ready to sleep, my head starts hurting or something and suddenly I don't feel tired anymore.

I'm too fuzzed out to do anything that requires thinking.  Wikiwalks (electric trains, the 1934 Chicago World's Fair, car engine arrangements, the 1945 U.S. handbook on German army equipment), LPs (Chip and Ironicus: MGS 2, for the second time), TV (Louis C K and Toys), and now sorting all the new laundry I got from Christmas/Graduation.  Why do office shirts come with either a half-dozen pins or the world's tiniest plastic-joiner-tie-things?  After dissecting four shirts, I now have the world's gothiest cardboard insert.  Seriously, I could kill a man with all the pins in this thing.

Oh nose, your avatar is a topless woman. Think of the children!

Originally, however, I came here to post about what I believe was a highly successful troll on /m/. It was a guy claiming that bullets accelerated as they moved, which was why they were better space-based weapons. Muzzle velocity only existed in a gravity well and was caused by gravity and atmospheric friction. And other ridiculous stuff.

Finally, Super Robot Wars Original Generation: The Inspector is beginning soon.

Standard ignition guns don't go off in space. No oxygen to ignite XD.

Rejected by a sucubus? Wow, that's gotta hurt man.
Yep, you know you are terrible with women when even the forces of Hell don't want to go near you.

At least my response against them is more justified, but still... :\

Yeah, there was a little bit on that as well.

Anyway, it's currently only reached the halfway commercial break, but I've already got a new desktop wallpaper and what I plan to make a new avatar.

You've got all the oxidizers you need in the cartrige. If you'll think about how does a cartrige fit in the barrel - gunpowder is in an airtight compartment between the back of the casing, barrel walls, and the bullet - then you'll realize that there isn't even a possibility of outside oxygen accessing the gunpowder.
So, yeah. At least this bit is not that hilarious.

Hm. Then I begin to wonder why guns can't be fired underwater then.

Guns won't fire properly if there are specs of dust in the barrels. Water sounds like a terrible thing to put in them.

Actually, Mythbusters tested firing guns underwater.

Basically, for automatic-loading weapons, you had one shot, as the bullet casing would get lodged and not eject properly. IIRC, revolvers were fine.

Being underwater destroyed their range, though.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

But they can: http://kwc.org/mythbusters/2006/04/episode_51_myths_reopened.html
The bullet performance will be atrocious though, to the point of not being practically feasible as a weapon. The water in the barrel will prevent the bullet from achieving as good velocity as with air or vacuum. Then the bullet will quickly slow down due to heightened drag. Furthermore, a bullet will tumble while traveling in such a dense environment. To keep the projectile straight underwater, it needs to be long and thin, like those harpoons you sometimes see the scubadivers equipped with.

I'm pretty sure your confusion stems from expecting bullets to work like black powder or something.  Then yeah you need air and no water for ignition to occur.  That's among the many reasons they put the powder in the air-tight casing.

Points of order on the MythBusters underwater test: Part of why revolvers work fine underwater is that the back of the breech is still open (hence the danger of burning your hands when holding a revolver wrong).  Firing underwater made a shotgun fucking explode, and I think it broke it a bolt-action rifle, but I don't actually remember if they tested one or not.  Probably not, since they already knew that supersonic projectiles, like rifle would produce, shred in water anyway.  Basic, only pistols really work underwater because of the slower bullet velocity, and then the big problem is clearing the chamber by whatever means the gun operates.
