This quote made me extremely happy today.

It's from Kurt Vonnegut's Jailbird. It's what you say when someone tells you they're lonely:

Quote
Why don't you take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut? Why don't you take a flying fuck at the mooooooooooooon?

I think I need to tell that to myself every time I feel unhappy, because it's a lot more satisfying than most of the responses I've gotten.

Vonnegut is wonderful.

In my dorm, I have a shoebox that has every single one of his published books in it.

I would die for that man, I swear.

o_O

I have... 3 or 4 of them now, I think.  Darn it, I really need to fill out my Irving and Vonnegut collections, unless they're like Steinbeck, in which case I have to pretend a good deal of their work doesn't exist.

Every Vonnegut I've read, even the bad ones, are golden.

(yes, even Deadeye Dick)

The fascinating thing about him is that I always read a novel, and then am left with a strong emotion, but little recollection of what I actually read about.  Well, okay, I remember the catch phrases (HiHo!  So it goes.) but not much else.  Hm.

Yeah! That's my favorite part. He's so amazing at reaching the reader. No matter what the topic is, he will find a way, through his dark humor, to make you care about it on an emotional level.

I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.

Just finished my first creative writing assignment!  I'm quite proud of it.  There's a surprising amount of philosophy and information that can be crammed into a simple, no-frills, written-for-clarity description.

It's called "Things illuminated by a broken street lamp," which is pretty cornball in its teleological...-ness (-osity?  -ity?), but kinda clever if I do say so myself.

At the very least, I think it's better than the example given.  Hmph.

I don't suppose you're going to post the writing for us to read it?  Also, damn you for reminding me that I have yet to make and significant effort at writing anything myself, after many many months of saying "any day now".

It made a public school teacher laugh

Vester, just curious, have you ever seen the film Waking Life?

Because...

If not, I have a film for you to watch.

Vonnegutian Wisdom for the ages.

I regret that I've only read a few of his books, and the only one I can keenly remember is "Slaughterhouse 5". He was a delightfully bizarre, irreverent, and poignant man.
