Right, so the movie How to Train Your Dragon.
It was good. Very much not the usual Dreamworks trash. There was laughable 'Viking' theme that is about as historically accurate as if aliens had landed to help them and a story predictable enough to guess what happens within the first ten minutes. Then there was the general feeling that some bits of the story were simply there because all kids movies need to adhere to a specific formula.
Despite all these things it is a good movie. Many nitpicks didn't even come to me while watching it because artistically it was very well done. The overall style of all their objects was very nice and they got good accents for the adults. Despite being a movie made for kids the art style was also strangely realistic, with very high quality landscapes and scenes. Character designs for the dragons also felt like something out of a childrens book, which was a very nice touch. The main dragon in particular, which from what I hear actually changes depending on what kind of person you are. Cat people see a kitten while dog people see a puppy. Interesting.
But perhaps the greatest thing about this is how Dreamworks did NOT apply their usual mistakes on this. No pop culture references, no attempts at impersonations, a minimum of annoying characters that take up little screen time and no attempts to latch onto the coattails of Pixar. Just Dreamworks working on something where money was not the primary driver for development. There was creativity and effort.
Granted this is not on the same level as the Pixar greats, but it is a decent movie that holds its own. It treads old ground with high quality and general pleasantness. But most of all it is not a piece of crap. Coming from Dreamworks, this is a big deal.
Makes me happy to not be disappointed.
