While old books are always cool, why is this particular edition so acclaimed?

It's generally considered the greatest Britannica of them all (formed the basis for all succeeding editions until 1974); and it's got a lot of historical value, being more or less the sum of Western knowledge right before the First World War began.

All that, and it's always fun at a century's remove to see what's aged well and what hasn't. Did you know that the Americans won in the Revolutionary War because America had "a population mainly of good English blood and instincts"? Or that it's irrational to "propagate low orders of intelligence, to feed the ranks of paupers, defectives and criminals ... which to-day constitute so threatening an obstacle to racial progress."?

Well that makes sense. To the british. It explains why the americans won but no one else had at that point.

I just completed a family tree of my friends in the Honors program at my university. It has more complexity than a circuit diagram of a modern motherboard. It has resonance structures, portals, and a transistor.

And several pieces of penguin duct tape, just because.

It's Halloween.  Best holiday.  No family dinners, nothing to buy, best weather, candy, scary movies, people dress like jackasses, great holiday all around.

At the very least it stops people from thinking about Christmas. I love presents, lights, decorations, and ham as much as anyone, but people this year are showing their "holiday cheer" before Halloween, when normally you're supposed to wait until after Thanksgiving. I just MAY need to take a BB gun to some inflatable reindeer.
