We actually had a demonstration (or two, can't remember now) back in GCSE chemistry. Pretty impressive stuff. Similar to this except that we actually had the demonstration inside the classroom.

We also got left alone in one of those science classrooms for an entire session once when someone forgot to assign a supply teacher. About two whole reels of magnesium ribbon were liberated that day. This is before the A level chemistry class where we would often cleanse the tables with fire. Burning any scattered powder with a held Bunsen burner like flame-thrower is great fun.

need something better than magnesium sparkler, i only had 20% chance for ignition.

Glycerin is typically used as a starter for thermite, by mixing it with potassium permanganate. I'd imagine it works better due to better contact and a longer burn time.
