In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

At first I thought I could assume that, but you never know. It could be literally anything, including a flash drive carrying the video files in which the scene is depicted.

Another happy for today:

It's close to midnight, and I'm finally doing my laundry. Load up the machine, put in the washing powder, go to pay... and the damn terminal won't let me pay. I try out various orientations of my card, but it appears that the 'OK' button doesn't work. I'm about to give up, but I make one last attempt - I hit that infernal box, and once again press the button.

Did you have 1.6 abgebuchts? They're trading at 1:232.4 in favor with Australio-Canadian harpodoodles.

I'd like a harpodoodle - maybe I can ask Max to send me one.

The cool thing about harpodoodles is if you have one in your account you can just print it out and it gets debited. Just don't wave too many of them around in a stack - they make the paper they're printed on very flammable.

Saw my first mindcracker on playmindcrack today.

It was Baj. Brits ho!

Free association and/or sleep deprivation: if when Bay12 takes over the world, we should install a puppet government in India called 'the Baj'.

I am now playing a platformer game where I'm a penguin with a sword. This site has many good things on it.

Well, it's painted with great skill, but the, how shall I say, artistic value is not so great, is it? The German distinction is 'Kunst' vs 'Kunsthandwerk' - roughly the line between 'art' and 'things that are pretty'. (I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to this though, so YMMV.)

Why is that?

I mean, it may not have the value of say a Picasso. But I find the style and subject matter greatly complementing each other for a greater impact. It shows something ordinary for the most part, in what would seem like realism, but there's something off, something not right with this other world, which is for all intents and purposes the same as our own. I feel that if the goal was to create this sense of wonder, strangeness and a tiny bit of discomfort then it has been met.

And I guess that's my definition (or one of them) of artistic value, if something evokes an emotional response then it has value (emotion being something other than WOW here, which this certainly acomplishes)
