Different screw pump tile.

So that one can easily tell which direction it's pumping, as well as which tile is the non-walkable one.

I was thinking the wall part could be a half-block (used in ballistae and catapaults), and the walkable part a double wall tile that alternates between single and double when running (like axles).

Aye, and if the screwy bit is the same tile as a siege engine part, that might make keep it easy for the graphics modders.

The problem here is that when a pump is being operated by a dwarf, there is no visible animation as the dwarf obstructs the shaft

So make the solid part flash from half-block to full-block.

What about using ╬, ╪, and╫ for animation so they mesh nicely with connecting shafts?

The "chair" part of the pump should be the one that's altered; otherwise we won't see the pumps moving when a dwarf operates it.

Why not go with the half-block, but make the background alternate between black and either blue or red, depending on the liquid being pumped?

I think the presence of a dwarf on the pump, along with liquid (if any) being pumped, would indicate that the pump is pumping.

The eternal suggestion voting, if I understand correctly, is for large changes to the game, particularly those that are already planned but players would like to have sooner rather than later.  Don't expect a groundswell of support for a simple graphical change.
