Irony's a bitch.
« on: September 03, 2009, 06:38:18 am »

Okay, so the computer I was using was too slow to run Dwarf Fortress.  We're talking, 5 FPS on a good day.  No biggie, I'll just read up on it instead.  Read all the cool threads here, learn how to put together a good fortress, keep running tabs on dev_now.html, all that jazz.

Then my roommate upgrades the RAM in the public machine.  DF still runs slow.  Probably a graphics card problem or something.  Just before I pack it in, I try turning Partial_Print:ON in the init file.  And lo and behold, it works!  100 FPS at the start, slows down to about 40 once all the dwarves are working.

Now bear in mind that at this point I've spend roughly 3 months thinking about DF on and off.  Over 12 hours cumulatively logged on the forums, and I don't know how many people I've bugged about it.

30 minutes later, I remember that I can't stand real-time strategy games.  >_<

Interesting. If Partial Print was so important I am surprised I barely know about it.

I could be wrong.  What would you call it when you spend that much time obsessing over something that it turns out you don't even like?

Well, while I don't think DF is a RTS, even if you did, there is always Adventure mode.

In the traditional sense of the word?  No, he's been dissolved in magma.

Let me get this straight.

You spent three months trying to figure out what's slowing the game down, and you just now found the most talked-about feature from a year ago?

Go take a look at the SDL versions.  You should see a further doubling in frame rate.

Also, most RTS games don't pause any time you want and do stuff.  DF is more like what The Sims wants to be when it grows up.

Yes, actually, I am trying to get myself banned.  I wish Toady would quit working on this worthless piece of junk and go back to teaching math.

Well, then just concentrate on the other parts of the game.

I for one play it as a plumbing simulator. Hence I vote for dwarven poop, btw.

Well... Puck, that would be a second source of fertilizer.

Just to clarify, I figured the problem was the processing power of the computer, so I didn't think to look elsewhere until that got upgraded.  And yes, I was already running the SDL version.  d13, I believe.

Still, could be worse.

It could have taken 6 months before I realized this.   ::)
