You guys should consider that DF is not primarily about violence/alcohol, it's a citybuilder at heart. One that is often very dangerous for the city involved, granted, but a citybuilder nevertheless. Dorfs are not all that warlike, they go to war if it suits their needs, but war is way for them, not a goal. Think something closer to the looping guitar in the actual game, something that makes you think more along the lines of 'lets try and survive what the mountains drop on/world throws at us' than 'WAR! WAAAGH!' 'BOOZE! WAAAGH!' or plain 'WAAAGH!' That is for Orc/Ork Warband, maybe, but for Dwarf Fortress.

I don't, in fact, I'm playing the 2d version lately, where you can safely bet half your founders die within the first 5 years.
But the dorfs don't agree with that, the music should reflect that. The majority of your population just wants to earn their cash, have some fun, and die in peace as opposed to many tiny pieces.

The soundtrack from Lords of Magic has so many instances of awesome epic fantasy themes.

Order Theme: Remeniscent of Toady's guitar song, plus an orchestra. I like it.
Earth Theme: Haunting, with a lot of resonant sounds, and tribal percussion.

I dunno, Toady's spanish guitar that plays on default is what I associate the game with. Its mellow and relaxing and fits the game's fantasy wilderness setting.

But I guess if DF puts you in the mood for Dragonforce or whatever, more power to you.

My wife complains if I play DF with anything but the included music; she says it helps her work/study, and other stuff just isn't the same.

However, if she isn't around I generally tune in to rainwave.cc and listen to video game music.

I've had success with Blind Guardian, any Nobuo Uematsu soundtracks, SPC music from old SNES games, etc. Fantasy, and generally speaking, non-vocal music.

German industrial metal seems almost too perfect for DF. Lots and lots of Eisbrecher, Oomph!, Megaherz, and Rammstein for my dwarves, in other words!

That's not ALL I listen to(although I mostly listen metal and hard rock while DFing), but if I wasn't already listening to something else...

Am I the only person who listens to different stuff for adventurer mode? Since adventurer mode tends to quite brutal, its nice to listen to some heavier stuff, not that fortress mode isn't pretty brutal, adventurer mode just does a better job at showing it.
