I never understood the Etymology of "Nonplussed". I don't get how they could get  a meaning of "confused or perplexed" or if you're going to use the nonstandard definition,"unimpressed" out of a word that should, judging by the root words, mean something more like "No more" or "unaltered".

I always assumed it was because if you're nonplussed you're so bewildered you have nothing to say.

As in, "I am completely nonplussed, I have nothing I can add to this conversation.  It's too weird for me"

Yeah the definition is basically "confused into unresponsiveness" but I don't get how that definition arose from those root words. Its like saying " I am un-added, I have nothing to add." Oh well, whatever.

Or nothing more. I understand the logic behind it, that it's basically like saying "I have nothing further to add." but the way it's used is like "I'm nothing further". If it were used like "I have nonplus to add," then that might make better sense.

I'd imagine, oh... start with Dick Tracy. Replace his overcoat with robes (I know most samurai wore lamellar in battle but we've seen that didn't quite work.) Swords, possibly sheathed, are a must. The gun I'm not sure about, but the fedora is a necessity. Maybe a magnifying glass? Dunno. I'd imagine more of a detective with a samurai penchant but hey, whoever's drawing can decide what looks right.
