You know, I never liked Blizzard that much, but there are, in fact, no big game companies I'd like, at all. I think, Blizzard is one of these companies that suck simply by being mainstream(once you start making games for the people out there, you will end up making crappy games, I mean, come on, LOOk at those people..), but among these companies, it is actually pretty good.
For example, they seem to care a bit about minorities, or atleast they don't suck up to Microsoft - There is a Mac version of WoW and most of their games support OpenGL, so I can actually play them on Linux. They also use Lua for scripting, instead of some crap like say, C#. It's not like Blizzard had to do it that way - If they only supported Windows, they probably would still make about 99% of their current profit. No, they simply do it because they're smart and don't want to depend on a large company which is currently ruining itself.
In contrast to that, there are many unusual games(indie games) that will completely rely on Microsoft and use shit like the Windows API, DirectX, .NET, etc. Maybe they just don't have the resources or experience to work with more reliable and compatible tools, but it really annoys me that someone who calls himself "independent" relies on Microsoft.
Second, as already said, Blizzard makes acceptable lore. I mean, they're mostly pretty cliché, any 10 year old who knows how fantasy/sci-fi stereotypes work could make stories like that, but hey, atleast they make stories that can be enjoyable following. The only problem is that they make linear stories(I think), so the player can't really influence much, and even the little possibilities they have to make the player feel like being in the gameworld they mess up. But, as said, they make enjoyable stories, and that's something rare in the mainstream game world.
Lastly, they manage not to be completely corrupt. I mean, they're corrupt, we all know that, I still don't know what they do with all that money - Maybe they smoke it, no idea. But at least, they will only force you to pay for nothing in some occasions, not in every occasion theoretically possible. Well, reading about that map purchasing stuff, that too seems to be changing, which is sad - But atleast it hasn't been that way in the past.
Anyway, you should get my point: Blizzard sucks, but it could suck worse =)
