MegaProject- It just got complicated.
« on: August 20, 2009, 12:40:13 am »

Well, I'm going to start a megaproject. I mean a MEGA project. It's something far beyond my capabilities and my dwarves are likely to burn in a fiery magma sauce.

Details- The Scourge of Armok, Aka, The World Just Got Fucked.

What's it going to be-

1. 1 large river basin with a fortress in it. Completely constructed of course, we aint mining a fortress, we're building one.

2. The Fortress has to be at least 20z levels tall, and 30x30 (Ugh... The building.)

3. The top Z level will be the roof, just 1z level above the lava, with a bridge extending from it to the edge of the map. One way in, one way out.

4. There's going to be one giant mother fucking magma water fall. 20z levels high, we'll see how my dwarves like mist when there faces are burning off.

5. A large cistern of water occupying the area under the fortress, supplied by... Oh I don't know, a river or something, falling off a cliff, down into the fortress cistern. But wait- that's not all. There will be a space between the fortress walls and the fortress floor, in this space I'll have a 21z level water fall. Top of the fortress, to the cistern below.

Here's the design-

x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * x
x*^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x

x* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *  x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x

That's the design for the central area,

# = Floor
X = Wall
* = Open Space
^ = Stairs

x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x
x * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * x
x*^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ############################## ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
x*^ ############################## ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
x*^ ############################## ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
x*^ ############################## ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ##############################^  *x
x*^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ *x
x* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *  x
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x

That's pretty much the top z level design, except I'll have a system that poors the water down the walls, I'll work that out later, too tired to make it in asci.

Here's a simple way to visualize what I mean by a magma waterfall-

x                    &|&&&&&&&&&
x                    &|&&&&&&&&&
x                    &|&&&&&&&&&
~~~~~~~~    &|&&&&&&&&&
~~~~~~~~    &|&&&&&&&&&
~~~~~~~~    &|&&&&&&&&&
x                    &|&&&&&&&&&
x                    &|&&&&&&&&&
x                    &|&&&&&&&&&
| = Edge
& = Magma
Pretty simple. Err- Well, simple being hellish mining, but simple anyway.
I have a template I think I'm going to use (the plane of cool, some where in the world gen cook book)
I'm going to try and pick a spot without too much mountain, just enough to make the fortress.
So- thoughts, tips? No seriously, tips, please. Also- I'm going to back up and probably release the saves.
(PS. Tried putting it in
Code: [Select]
tags, fucked too much up <.<.
This is gonna be a hell of a fortress, although I forsee that you'll need a huge workforce if you expect to get those floors completed quickly.
HOWEVER!
Awesome dual waterfall is awesome. Can't wait to see you pull it off.
Wait, does that work? By which i mean, can immigrants/traders/goblins/wildlife enter the map via a bridge suspended 20 Z levels high in the air?
It needs to have something to break up the outer wall design or else it might as well be a Black tower, only fit for goblins.
just one possible Idea
Code: [Select]
###      ###
#o#      #o#
############
  ########
  ########
  ########
  ########
############
#o#      #o#
###      ###
or maybe build a giant hand or skull or some other artfull form as the Magmafall spouts? otherwise it is a great idea and I hope it works out for you.
EDIT: I just thought of something, you could have your water pump shafts be located in the corners as I suggested above, and the top of the structure have a ring aqueduct around the edge lined with 1 square bridges or floodgates linked to a Cat controlled pressure switch room to get random coverage of the fall and less work.
You should put your diagrams in CODE tags so the font lines up.  BTW, falling magma does not create mist.  (Or happy thoughts - from dwarves, anyway.)  God help your FPS.
I know, the mist was a joke :p. Mist = Happy thoughts Magma = Sad thoughts. Har har. Xd. Anyway...
This is going to be... Difficult. Anyway, I'm thinking I'm going to make a large humanoid statue of Armok extending from the bottom of the water fall up, lava flows down, into his head, and out his eyes :o. Maybe have a flood gate and pressure plates that involve some sort of ridiculous presedure in which a dwarf is placed in a coffin he'll cry tears of magma.
Post 1-
I believe I have found a fair location to start the mega project. With three 'mountain tiles' up top, it doesn't have a terrible ammount of mountain to dig down, but offers plenty of ruck. The magma is right next to it, I believe I'll have to make a pump to bring the magma up when I'm flodding, or, hopefully, if it's a short z lvl above the rest of the map, that won't be necessary... We'll see when I embark. There's a brook. The trees will be vaporized later, but there there for now. I believe it's either 3x5 or 3x6, which will do :D.
What I'm thinking: After the fortress is built, I think all peasants and such are going to be fucked. I might end up building a 3 tiles walkway around the edge of the map... That's be odd, but we'll see <.<.
The brook is named "Onslaughtlessons" awesome. The irony comes when we look at the forest name, the forest of harmonies. :).
I plan on using this:
Proficient Miner/ Leader Skills
Proficient Miner
Proficient Grower/ Brewer
Proficient Cook/ Butcher
Proficient Mason/ Mechanic
Proficient Woodcutter/ Carpenter
Proficient Marksdwarf with some other stuff...
Items-
2x picks
1x battle axe
120x Dwarven Beer
20x Dwarven Ale
20x Dwarven Wine
188x Plump Helmet Spawns
200x Perch
20x Copper bars
2x Copper Cross Bows
That's a real dwarf name if I've ever seen one. It describes perfectly what building a fortress mostly submerged in magma is like.
I sometimes wonder at Toady for including 'rape' and 'anus' in the language files.  Especially 'anus' - I can't think of any historical or mythological events with the name 'anus' in them.
