Artifact: turtle bone... buckler?!
« on: August 07, 2009, 01:31:30 pm »

Had a dwarf go possessed, and they made an artifact, all good.

I've seen items made in a shop with materials that are not normally possible, that doesn't bother me - but this buckler was made in a Craftdwarf's shop - and "bucklers" cannot normally be made in a Craftdwarf's shop!

Any guesses what's going on? Is it because other "armor" items can be made there?  :-\

Dwarves can do pretty much whatever they want when making an artifact. That includes items like beds which are normally impossible to make out of anything other then wood, but I've seen bone beds, stone beds, even gem beds. What workshop they use, though, depends on their highest skill, not what is being made. Although the workshop will determine what kinds of materials will be used.

Artifacts can be anything the dwarf wants them to be.

As you may have noticed with the decorations on artifacts, they just don't follow the same rules as regular items, and so you can have rock decorations on an artifact, which is impossible for normal items(Not taking modding into account)

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?

The reason it was made in a craftsdwarf shop is because the base item, bone, is only manipulated at craftsdwarf shops. Where would you have expected it to be made? It's not metal, so a forge makes no sense.

Artifacts are strange. I managed to get a turtle shell cage, for armok's sake. A TURTLE SHELL CAGE.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Ebel Tan, The renown of Ticking, a turtle shell chain.

This is a turtle shell chain. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with Sard and encircled with bands of Chestnut and Alder. This object menaces with spikes of Alder, Sard, and Blak pyrope. On the item is an image of dwarves in turtle shell. The dwarves are laboring. On the item is an image of a horse in Mudstone. Worth 36000.

I still can't figure the 'image of horse' out. We killed dealt with our pets quite some time ago, and we've had non-stop yearly goblins-on-beakdog sieges since forever.

How about a leather FLUTE. I guess the bands of turtle bone and encrustment of limestone gives it structure. Otherwise it's a useless piece of leather with holes in it and a bunch of decorations.

Edit: Bluea, maybe that dwarf likes horses.

Where would you have expected it to be made?

That's the thing - I wouldn't expect it to be made at all.

But I guess if you have beds made in mason's shops or forges (of stone or metal, respectively), then you can have bucklers made in craftsdwarfs' shops.

Just struck me as very odd at the time.

I had a dwarf make a Chrysocolla throne at the jewelers. Too bad it was only made from one material.

A gem throne? Wow - too bad it wasn't made out of the right material.

I guess I just haven't drawn any "truly bizarre artifact" cards until now.

I got a turtle bone battle axe.

A dorf took the bones of two turtles, and made a GOBLIN REMOVAL FACILITATOR from them. a LARGE one.

Goblin bone bin.
Really cool, but you can't send it to be used in trade. Had to dump everything in it and then wait for it to get used for metal bars.

I've also had gem beds and thrones, in the same fortress. I can only imagine that, since the dwarves can only haul 1 gem at a time, that they are HUGE, so making a chair or bed out of one just requires the desire to do so.

Not to mention gem windows, they would have to either be huge or requiring multiple gems.

I have a gem and rock encrusted turtle bone ROPE.  Did make a really bitching well with my artifact bucket and iron ore block (which is bizarre since I have no iron ore to have made the block from...).

Also have a fish bone throne.

But, IIRC, it's more the dwarf's preferences then the constraints of logic or sanity that pick what he makes.
