It's generally understood that gender and sex are unrelated in troll society, and presumably then reproduction. For instance, this is why Karkat doesn't understand why there's a word for "homosexual".

I think Hussie said somewhere that troll gender is primarily for easier identification by the reader. Besides, it wouldn't make since for them to have separate sexes when they do not have separate roles for those sexes to take in the reproductive process.
