If you try try cut a homestuck characters arm of, they go into sprite mode, hiding their appendages in the abstraction space. You have to surprise them.

I think you lose those powers when the dream self takes over for the real self.

The ironic thing is that when the characters don't usually show their arm in sprite mode, Jack's severed arm was shown when he's in that mode.
