The labs are filled with cloning equipment to make them, meaning the game constructs were made in these labs instead of being created along with the Medium when one of the kids enters it/God Frog for that universe is made. Which means the labs are generated for a strange middle-step or somebody built the labs.

A strange middle-step would be consistent with the rest of the game. Consider the alchemy process, for instance. You need to punch cards with the designix, extrude cruxite from the cruxtruder, carve totems with the lathe, and finally haul the carved totems to the alchemiter to actually make items.

These pesterlogs are pretty cool. It seems that John is more or less okay with Vriska killing him. Also, Jade is going to get the forge running, which is good I guess.

John is taking the whole marry rose thing quite seriously. Or, at least, more seriously than I expected.

Karkat must be a master of romance whose will is realized through crude shipping diagrams and explicit and forceful instruction. When he speaks, paradox space pairs off into sensible relationships.

I'm guessing the labs are pregenned, and used by both sides to create better chess soldiers from the templates once there's more prototyping data. 

Underlings like ogres or imps get automatic upgrades, but possibly those giant knight/bishop things don't (or wouldn't without a ring/scepter, which is essentially the same dealie).
