Pathing and Lag
« on: June 23, 2009, 07:32:29 pm »

So I'm having Fun with DF, but now I worry that my unorthodox method of structure design is causing... Lag. If I build each dorf his own house, complete with a private bedroom, workshop, dining room, food storage, a well, and a panic switch for collapsing the bridge leading to it; and arrange these in a block style with 2-4 width roads leading between them... Will it cause more lag than just making one large housing block, a large factory block, etc?

Wait, why are you even doing this in the first place? Own rooms? Fine. Own Workshops and Wells? Jesus Christ. That's insanely silly and it's gonna be a hell of a task once you reach the measly number of 50...Also, the noise would annoy Dwarves, and sure, you can probably nullify it with an awesome Dining Hall, but why have it in the first place?

I'd just stick to the usual methods of building.

As for your question, i'm not actually sure. Just advising against doing this. Highly advising against doing it...

My design has the bedroom and the workshop on the same level; there's no noise problem.

I'd just stick to the usual methods of building.

Where's the fun in that? :)

Own Workshops and Wells? Jesus Christ.

I guess I shouldn't mention the automatic shower device that activates as each dwarf returns home after a lovely stay in his very own private gardens, or relaxes in his private swimming pool. O:) All this and more on a 4x4 map.

If only I could funnel magma under the pool, and give each dwarf his own sauna.  :(

Sneaky Quick Edit: Really the only problem comes with dwarves who have multiple workshops to themselves. The Meatsmith has a butchery and a tannery, the Woodsmith has a craftsman's shop and his carpenter's shop. The Burnsmith needs a wood burner's place and can double as something else. The Weapon/Armorsmith often have some time off, so they can do double work with their own smelter... Though it worked last time, this map is mostly obsidian so I doubt I'll be finding much in the way of natural iron shy of Goblinite.

Sheesh, no need to give the guy hell for it. I think it's a perfectly fine idea, one that I would personally never use because I don't care enough about my dwarves, but it's not bad.

As for whether or not it would cause more lag, I doubt it could cause any more than the alternative.

I understood nothing, contributed nothing, but still got to win, so good game everybody else.

I didn't take it as hostility. More his mind was overwhelmed at the vision of a new Dwarven Utopia. Where everything is smithed; even the food is lovingly crafted at the Mushroomsmith's private farms, and the Treesmith tends to his... trees. :)

This, even now i'm smiling non-stop. Especially at the "Dwarves come in and get showered" comment hahaha. It's awesome, that's why I was so shocked. I'm glad you didn't take it as hostility or anger, cause I was just overwhelmed and, truth be told, jealous of your awesome dreams :p

Hope it works out, but it shouldn't really cause lag.

The shower thing is the worst. I can't quite figure out how to time it right. =/ All dwarves move at different speeds, and it requires a small nook.

Pathfinding won't cause too much lag, because your halls should be wide enough for the travel they get.

However, the water works behind the shower idea will lag a little bit.
