It's lost in legends, nobody knows, same with Copperblazes or Mad Urist's tunnels.

Besides, I've kind of been implying that the actual location of Boatmurdered has been lost to the myths of time, as have the other 2D forts.  If Copperblazes is lost like Atlantis (or possibly Carcosa), Boatmurdered is lost like Gomorrah.

Yeah I drew large portions of the map up from the map sets found in Nilzares, Waterbore, Olonkulet, and a few Embark pictures from different threads in the forum then filled in the blanks and tried to keep it consistent though I decided not to display rivers (some could be extrapolated from the appearance of valleys coming down out of the mountains) as the map is kinda squished at 50x80 and rivers are kinda tile-space intensive (particularly so going north-south) but if people want them displayed I'll add them.

That's a rather run-on sentence...

Anyway, the positioning of Lanternwebs seems fine to me, especially since that would mean that Lanternweb's home fortress would be off the map to the east (which is fine, since they are completely surrounded by mountains and hadn't had any contact with anyone else.

If you'd like, though, I can provide maps of the area around Lanternwebs without a problem.

I'm generally not over-wordy but, occasionally I misstep and use words instead of periods.  :-\

More maps are always great.

Wow.  I can see this being a tricky project to complete.  I need to read more of those stories.

Well, we're mostly done for this version, we just need more maps for some detailed areas, different eras, etc. Maybe a map of the underground as well, especially for the next version.

Anyway, this is ready for sticky or merging into the hall of legends thread, mostly. As long as we keep it updated we're good. Once it's established, new forts just pick a date and a location for their fort on this. meaning we just have to occasionally enlarge the map.

Instead of stickying this thread, perhaps a new one could be started and be dedicated to the community world.  The first post could contain the finalized map and timeline with each subsequent post containing data about a specific site on it.  It would be a index/glossary/table of contents of sorts.  We can still discuss/build in this thread.

Regarding the state of the map:
I'm going to go ahead and move the date up to AD 1200+.  As it stands the map's timeline events/fortress population is too low for there to be significant changes era to era unless there is a major event of some kind or one wants to track the human civs as they deforest their surroundings (this would be different.  To that end I'm going to flip all the known abandoned/destroyed forts' icons over to ruins.  I think it's important to point out that a good number of forts on the map are still ongoing with uncertain ends.

Nilzares:
In keeping with BB's and Ry's input, I think Nilzares should be moved at least a few tiles to the south and the mountains to the west bumped a little more so.  The latest update of Nilzares seems to indicate that the fort is ruined at some point in it's future (though it might be resurrected) so I'm going to flip it over to a ruin.

Migrursut:
If there's no other suggestions I'm going to relocate this to the northern red desert as it is more keeping with the fort's story.  This should probably added to the timeline in the vicinity of AD ~0.

Waterbore/Olonkulet:
Flipping these to ruins.

Halltraded (Suggested, Keldor):
Any more ideas on where to place this?  Needs to be in a forest, likely near Abbyverse.  I'm thinking a little to the west and north. If included this would also need to show up on the timeline.

Blockedlance (Suggested, Mr. Gimp):
I'm thinking in the southeast instead of the grassy plains/hills there could be a few mountains.  It'd be a decent fit for Blockedlance's map with the southern sea, conifer forests, and a mountain range with goblins+dwarves to the north.  How cold is it in Blockedlance?

Mountainbanners (Suggested, Barbarossa):
Needs to be somewhere relatively warm and in a valley?

Unnamed Mountainhome:
Should we just drop this?  Nothing interesting going on here as far as I know.

Thoughts? Adjustments?

Here's my idea for the general temperatures of the map using my near non-existent knowledge of climatology/geography/meteorology:

Scale: Scorching-Hot-Warm-Temperate-Cold-Freezing

The general idea is that warm equatorial ocean currents deposit warm water in the western ocean/seas and the west to east flow of the air currents carry that warm moist air over the inland sea while the southern mountain chain impedes the heavier colder air from the moving north until it gets over the southern sea.  To be honest I'm not so sure the inland ocean would be warmer the surrounding land or not.

More likely the inner ocean would be cooler, maybe Temperate, bringing water up from the ice plains/cold sea to the south.  So you'd get a core of temperate regions around there, suitable for say a few human nations or some elves, with the heavy equatorial climes kept to the north.

I probably should take another look at the raws and refresh myself to what they contain now that you mention habitability...

Nevertheless, same scale as above:

Some tiles are going to be shifted around still but this I think can serve as a general guide till things are finished unless something glaring shows up.

Good progress so far, although the climate overlay is nice, let's keep that as an extra and focus on finalizing the regular maps, once that's done, I'll start a new thread called the unified world, with the three era maps, a map without forts but with temp overlay, the timeline, and a post or two of reserved space for later updates. Once that's done, we can ask writers to start taking that into account if it isn't too much of a bother.

Spoiler: Early Period BAD ~15 (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Middle Period AD ~140 (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Late Period AD ~1200 (click to show/hide)

Each period map has a list of names at the right which lists the sites in western-most to eastern-most order.
