Evil Genius- A classic from 2004
« on: May 25, 2009, 01:17:20 pm »

I'm wondering how many of you guys ever played one of my all-time favourite games, right along with The Sims and Monkey Island... (And Dwarf Fortress.  ;D) Evil Genius! You control..Well, just an evil genius, but you *command* your minions to steal gold from countries, build your evil lair, and eventually take over the world with a doomsday device. For those who don't know what I'm talking about..

You've got different types of minions, which come in 4 different levels- (Think Peasant > Dwarf > Super Dwarf >Mega Dwarf) Workers, who are the lowest of the low, but do a bit of everything, Social minions, who distract the many tourists on your island with a nice hotel, (Don't want them reading your doomsday plans. Or clogging your traps. Or taking up space in your freezer room.. Why they even came to the island is beyond me.) Science minions, who research new types of traps and many other cool things,as well as repair your broken equipment, and your military minions, who fight off the forces of justice, who are trying to put a stop to your evil plans.

You also have Henchmen, who are your strongest, baddest, minions. (Think Jaws from any of those James Bond films.) The more evil you are, as in, the more minions you send off into the world to do 'Objectives,' such as rob a bank, steal important tech, or just cause evil mayhem, the more henchmen you get. They can be defeated, both on your islands and out in the world, (Just a map, really, you really only go to 2 different islands, as far as I know. You never see them actually robbing said banks.) as many times as they want, because they have nigh infinite lives. I say nigh, because they really only have 3 lives, but they only lose a life when they are defeated by a Super Agent.

A super agent is a special agent that the different 'Justice leagues' of the world will send at you, each 'Justice league' has only one super agent. (To my knowledge.) They will wreck up your base, with their special powers, kill your minions and even possibly you. When you do defeat them, they too do not die. However, you can put them in your jail cells for a while, where before they break out, (Which they will) you will have the chance to torture them with all your various evil tools. If you torture them with the right one, which, will probably take quite a while, and they have probably left and came back to your island a few times, they will be destroyed for good.

There's alot more to this game, with twists and turns around ever corner. I really recommend you try it, its a great, great game.

I've never beat the game, however, because whenever I try to play it through, my PC breaks from a completely unrelated source. (Bad luck, sadly.)

ANYWAY! Back to my original question- Anyone got any great stories they would like to share from their own evil lair? Amazing moments, maybe? Or just agree with how awesome Evil Genius is?  ;D

I only played the EG demo. It was a great game, but nothing I could remember from it.

Oh, I loved that game. That was one of the games that I actually bought after pirating. My friend also bought it. Had the most intricate trap system I've ever made, even more so than DF, since making traps in DF is sorta cheating :P

I killed all the super agents. And the last mission was really easy for me because of a nasty trick..

Hehe, and it's sort of fun that if you...

It's an awesome game, but IMHO too easy. Lol, I checked on the Internet and with my friends and turns out I was the only one who built an elaborate trap system. None of the walkthroughs even had my idea, and my friends were completely baffled with what my traps did. I designed my traps to hurt the agents so much more and not harm confused/tired minions of mine.

Trap spoiler you won't find in walkthroughs:

I'm pretty sure DF players could make a better trap system, though.

There's also that exploit that lets you get a lot of money without anyone coming, but that comes with a drawback - stealing all that money will make the various countries rather angry early on, before you unlock good minions so I wouldn't recommend it.

My first time through I made a very big mistake.  I thought, "Hey, I get notoriety if I do difficult things, like completing missions, and taunting captured prisoners!  I'm going to do that a whole bunch, and it'll be good for me!"

"Why are there five agents attacking me?!"

I really wish the game had three levels instead of just two.  My first map was very noobish, and my second one I didn't really know what I was doing just yet.

That was a fun game. I liked that Russian hero, who I think was called Red Ivan. He had a rocket launcher with massive range, but he tended to use it inside the base. Thus, I always locked Red Ivan in a closet when not in use.

I also liked social minions. After being swarmed with valets, most low-moderate strength intruders got confused and were safely escorted out, having seen nothing of my evil operation besides a strangely large amount of valets on an otherwise deserted island. Without evidence, I wasn't usually attacked unless I stole something.

I never did beat that game though. I only bothered getting to the second island once, and my researchers were too busy staring at the incomplete doomsday device to get me the advanced sentry guns that my OCD needed.

Lol, I designed my traps, halls, and the triggers to blow up in such a way that they catch fire from Red Ivan's rocket, and blow up another time as soon as the agents get up. Which gives Red Ivan enough time for another shot :P

Are you referring to the fact that you could steal tons of money as soon as you get acess to the world map but before you finnish the first few training missions? I always did that you just leave the game for the heat to cool off before capturing the nanny.

I love Evil Genius and all but I keep hitting game ending glitches making it entirely pointless for me to play the game.

So I don't bother.

Here is a tip:

Super Agents are powerful however the best way to deal with them is to swamp them with social minions who will destroy their mind. Once this happens use traps that don't deal damage on them as many times in a row as possible (For example the Blender). This can keep Super Agents pacified until they have to leave.

Yeah, there was something wrong with that. I think the game calculates the wrath of the powers that be by the amount of agents you kill and the amount of money you steal from them. I forgot what exactly, but I think it makes your minions more prone to getting killed by agents. If you really want to do it, just do it on only one faction, so only that one faction gets really pissed off.

Hehe, only works on the early ones, especially the bimbo. Later on, you get that Rambo guy who blasts everything he sees, including social minions :P But definitely don't attack the early ones, they have far too many HP to take down.

Well I have two things to say
1) Traps should be those torchur devices (Ugn can't spell it)

and it only doesn't work against shooting super agents who will shoot first. Even Jackie Chan who does attack minions on sight can be swamped. (You will lose a few of them however)

This is because once a Social minion starts speaking to them they are forced to go through with the animation, in which the next social minion will hit while they are stunned and so on in endless loops.

Though Id have to see if it works on rambo. I know it works on three of the 5 Super Agents.

Quote
definitely don't attack the early ones

Well it isn't that they are tough (Having properly trained characters with ranged attacks helps while you swamp them with other characters) it is that they are a waste of time and usually come at too high a cost.

Torture, you mean.

And, haven't anyone at the least tried to find the weaknesses of the Secret Agents, to stop them from bothering you in the first place?

Well the weaknesses are all missions you can take on the map but it makes the game much more uninteresting. Only James Bond has no weakness

That isn't James Bonds weakness so much as "You Beat the Freeken game already!"

He will die no matter what you do if you beat the game.

The only specific way to be an agent I remember is capturing the teddy bear of that russian special ops lady.
