By adding [PET] to the GCS entry.

Or by using a dungeon master.

[PET] and [COMMON_DOMESTIC] will let you buy them tame on the embark screen.

This fort doesn't look like a new one, and a named war dog means that this fort saw enemies. Thus a dungeon master is a pretty viable answer.

Uh, those aren't *actually* tame GCSs-that fort hasn't had a DM, or they would be called "stray giant cave spider". Same thing happens when elves bring you pets with the [PET_EXOTIC] tag when you don't have a DM (like alligators). So I'd say elf-bought through modding, or tamed and the DM died (but I do believe they would be called tame stray anyways).

They are called (Tame), but I've missed the "stray" part, good find.

I think there is a more difficult taming procedure that I have seen people mention where if you trap it and place it in a closed of room and drop kittens and such down for it to eat they eventually become tame. I think I saw a thread about that in relation to a dragon a while ago.

Haven't experienced it personally so I dont know

That sounds incredibly unlikely.

I think that those were made by reactions, and are therefore vermin.  (Tame) without stray means vermin.

Those are tame giant cave spiders that adopted dwarves through the [VERMIN_HUNTER] tag. They are not "Stray" because they belong to someone, and they do not have names because [VERMIN_HUNTER] adopted animals do not get names.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

With vermin tame goes in front, eg. 'tame fluffy wambler'.
