Flat worlds still spawn mobs as normal right? And trees? Might be a fun challenge map using equivalent exchange.
Flat worlds spawn only a flat plain of grass four blocks above bedrock. The only deviation to this is villages which can be set to spawn. From the random chests inside them you can get any material in the game if lucky enough.
So if I start a flat world with a few saplings in my inventory I'll probably do alright. Once you manage to get a philosopher's stone you can transmute for more saplings or whatever else you need. It would be extremely time intensive to do though as dirt only has a value of 1.
How would you GET the stone though? I don't think I've ever seen redstone or glowstone in chests before...
Is nether flat as well? ;)

Villages have lava and water, and thus cobblestone and thus obsidian and smooth stone.

You need diamond to mine obsidian though.

Who needs to mine it when you can cast it?

And random chests spawn in villages now I believe, which have a chance of having iron and diamonds.

Assuming you can get at least one bucket you can just cast the obsidian in place.  It feels a lot less time consuming than actually mining the stuff.

You make excellent points, and I had not thought of obsidian casting.

I can't wait to get the chance to faff around in a flatworld anyway, might be interesting for setting up giant industrial complexes.

If we had a way to transmute stuff into silver/copper/tin you could make anything you needed via Equivalent Exchange once you got a philosopher's stone. Maybe start with one but nothing else on a flat map.

EqEx has built in addons for IC and RP, the autodetection for them is just broken currently, it'll most likely be fixed when it's updated.

That would be the best thing ever.

After playing a while you should get a gigantic factory in the middle of a flat world. Bonus points if you could somehow make it build terrain, with the ores and everything.

I wouldn't be surprised if he just forgot about them. The new recipes seem broken. I feel like not as much work was put into them.

Could be eventually possible with Redworld's frames. Frame + deployer + some means to semi-randomly determine block placement (keeping in mind formation of veins or deposits) = manual world-builder. You'd probably be required to have EE, though, just to get started, and to create further materials from light (collectors/condensers).

I went looking at a post Elloram made about the future of Redworld. There is some pretty serious potential in it, far more than I know I could ever grasp, being pretty unimaginative as I am. Really, the whole breadth of modding available in Minecraft, and the potential of it, may as well stop development on any further core features and focus on making modding easier (and perhaps allow mods to plug together easier) and more efficient processing/memory management. An exception might be villager AI; I don't know what the goal is there, though I'm to understand Millenaire and ToK already do a lot to improve it, but it's about the only part of core Minecraft that's still 'unrealized' by vanilla development.

I had this tame something once. I named it 'wut'. Didn't ever actually see it until I wandered off once and found out I now was the proud owner of a turtle named 'wut'.

Sadly it suffocated in a low ceiling while I was wearing it as a hat. :(
