Editing init.txt ruins boot
« on: May 04, 2009, 11:55:24 am »

System is eeebuntu linux, and 40d11 df runs fine 'out of the box' in fullscreen. Windowed mode doesn't work. However, the instant I do anything with init.txt, it goes into blackscreen. I know the game is running fine, and even recognising init.txt settings: I can turn off the intro and then exit the game by pressing up-enter to highlight the exit option "blind".

Anyone know what's goin' on?

Hm... I assume you're on an eeePC, right? If not, I don't know why you'd be using eeebuntu....

Are you running one of the 40d# versions? They're available from the dev page and run natively in linux. Try that, if you aren't already.

Turn off Compiz, if you're using it.

By Armok, I will write code to detect that bloody thing. And KILL IT HORRIBLY.

Set desktop effects to the minimum, more exactly.

I prefer 'none'. Seriously, it's like a 'break OpenGL apps mode' switch that defaults to on. *stab* *stab* *stab*

In "fairness", it's supposed to work fine with DRI2.

Pity most drivers still don't support it, and it requires a bleeding-edge version of X.org to boot.

Hmm. As best I can tell, eeebuntu doesn't actually use compiz... if I could find it in the system I'd have already stabbed it ;) it might be there and couched in the OS, but compiz interference wouldn't explain why the game runs fine until I modify init.txt

I've tried several, with the simplest being changing it from "prompt" windowed mode to "no", or turning the intro off. I've modified it in two different text files in case it was a save-format issue, but I can't see DF booting if it was a format issue.

Oh, it'll boot; it's got defaults. They just aren't very useful defaults. I don't know if it could account for what you're seeing, but to be on the safe side, could you upload init.txt somewhere?

Both the original and an edited-that-doesn't-work version, please, so we can compare.
