That's one of the funniest things I've read on these boards. Flat out.

Well delivered, well timed, sir.

Lear -

Just remember that you are, literally, playing with fire.   Don't let it leak, don't let it overflow.  Don't dig near those trenches.

Show great respect, caution, forethought and planning, and you'll be fine.

Probably.

God, can anyone answer a question like this without making another unoriginal DF joke? Magma will only harden when it is combined with water, and magma will evaporate at 1 depth. You should be worrying about your dwarves dodging into the magma during fights. Also, for future reference, it is best to consult the DF wiki on questions like this, because most people on these forums like to make jokes like that.

wouldn't rain harden the magma?
Nope. Rain only affects murky pools, so unless the magma is in the murky pool, nothing will happen.

I've never had problems with magma moats when I first started.  I was being truthful, the only other problem I could fathom is making sure not to channel into your own base....errr fort.

One time I decided I wanted an above ground moat contained within two walls with a bridge. Then I realized that some of the materials I used in the pumps were not magma-proof. Miscellaneous bad things happened shortly thereafter.

The temperature from the first magma moat I made seemed to lag that particular fort, or at least that was the best explanation I could come up with at the time. Seeing as it's fine everywhere else I doubt this was the case.

Then for my next fort the pumps kept burning, which really delayed the moat filling.

I thought most moats came with a wall on the interior edge- what kind of moat setup do you have that your soldiers have much chance of falling in?

It's confirmed in my current fort; I'm storing magma in a murky pool with a few spaces still open for magma to be poured in, it's rained since, and nothing has happened to it.
Also, rain dropping a few Z-levels down into magma does nothing to the magma.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.
