My soldiers refuse to spar.
« on: April 24, 2009, 01:37:14 am »

In all six years the fortress has existed, not one time has a soldier participated in sparring.

*I have several standing down.
*I have a room with two armor stands and two weapon racks marked as barracks.
(I did Q > make barracks/armory > free room)
(I also tried assigning one to a dwarf in another room)
*They ain't got nothin' to do
*While I had an activity zone marked as a meeting hall, they just hung out there.  Now that I've removed it, they're just standing around in random areas like everyone else.

Am I missing something?

How big is the room?
I find that clearing loose stones off the floor and adding beds designated as barracks helps otherwise.

It's got about 8x8 of free space.

NEVERMIND.

I can't believe I waited 4 days enduring this problem, then figured it out myself seconds after posting a thread for help.

I also learned a new valuable lesson about room assignment...

Pressing "Make free room" just made it a non-barracks essentially useless room.

I thought it just madde it available for use by anyone rather than being owned, and was part of the process of making a room which you had to choose either that or assigning an owner.

WOW ninjad... I had just hit enter on this

hitting free room makes it not a barraks it in essence frees the room up for other uses. did you actualy hit free room? that might be your problem. you dont realy have a barracks :D

Yeah, I kept making it a barracks then immediately removing the designation.

Same goes for every other unowned item in my fortress.

I was wondering why no one was hanging out in the lavish hall I built...

On a somewhat related note, is there any mod that increases the healing rate of wounds?  I'm worried about my soldiers sparring, especially since stone hauler broke his arm in the first year and is still sleeping it off five years later.

Edit:

AGH!

I wish I never figured this problem out!

They've already broken each other's bones, and there's only one uninjured dwarf left!  My fortress is defenseless!

Your Dwarves must really lack armor.

Or they're all just horribly bloodthirsty.

Heh. That's why I typically let them train up to champion wrestlers first, to make sure they tough and agile, before giving them armor (first prio!) and weapons (secondary).

You should still give them armor as wrestlers too...

I dunno, in my most recent experience I had to spend a lot of time dumping +Iron Chain Mail+ out of their hands after I gave my sparring wrestlers armor. It might be worth the risk to wait until they have weapons to give them armor just to save yourself time and headaches.

Well a titan just came waltzing into my fortress and ate all my dwarves.  Even an impromptu Ragnarok was insufficient.

Stupid lazy soldiers...

My favorite is when they decide they need to go grab a beer during a battle.   ::)

Pressing "Make free room" just made it a non-barracks essentially useless room.

Not perfectly useless - once the dwarven economy kicks in, dwarves will grab "free" bedrooms as their own (if you don't assign them.)  Letting them self-sort is not a bad way to go, depending.

YOU MISUNDERSTAND.  FREE ROOM KILLS THE ROOM DESIGNATION. IT IS NOW NO LONGER A ROOM.

▲, ▼: Good.  Just clearin' this up for all de'm newbs.
