Vinegar.
« on: April 22, 2009, 01:04:28 am »

Vinegar has played a major role in real-world history, serving as a condiment and an aid in cooking, as a method of preservation, for cleaning, in medicine, as bug repellent, and many other purposes.  It's also fairly easy to create even just with things and structures already in the game; a task at a still could do it using alcohol, say (or from anything you could use to create alcohol, for simplicity's sake.)

I agree. It's something small but it is those things that give the game depth and add to the fun.

I agree with anything that helps portray how 14th century communities actually functioned, and moves away from a D&D-ish, 'everyone is an adventurer' feel. (Which isn't to say DF isn't pretty far along that path already.)

Nice, clean suggestion! If water contamination/stale water enters the game, maybe adding vinegar to water could make it more drinkable - unless I am mistaken, vinegar has both (mild) antiseptic properties as well as making dull water pleasant to drink (Why was Christ given vinegar to drink on Calvary* - was it to torment him, or as a sort of soft-drink - the Coca-Cola of the day? I have been wondering about this some times)

*For once in a very long while on a militaristic fantasy game forum, Calvary actually IS the correct spelling.

Cave spiders are in cahoots with the enemy.
I will spend a great deal of my time drowning the little beggers in vinegar.

Well, vinegar is fine mixed in with something, but IIRC it's kinda bad to drink it straight.

It's not bad for you, it's just very strong. Most people wouldn't find the taste pleasant.

I know people who drink it straight.

And yeah, basically they used vinegar/alcohol as a way to kill bacteria in water.  Think Grog.

Vinegar's very good for preserving foods, vegetables in particular, so it could easily become a recipe ingredient that could-if it ever gets to that point-block spoilage by bacteria.

Vinegar is also an excellent general cleanser, and might also be used to clean wounds, or-by boiling in vinegar-to sterilize bandages. I'll research that.

I do know that vinegar has many, many uses, some medical in nature.

Pickled plump helmet, anyone?

It'd be interesting if food spoiled over time unless specially preserved via pickling, candying (with dwarven syrup), smoking, drying, etc. Trying to survive winter without your dwarves revolting because the only food available is plump helmets might make for an interesting challenge. However, at the moment time passes too quickly for this to make much sense; if foods spoiled in a couple of months then the players would be revolting.

Fresh food-and preserved food as well, depending on the type of food and means of preservation-might spoil at different/varying rates.

Some foods obviously spoil, in real life, after a few hours or days without refridgeration, while others can last for up to a few weeks.

Few unpreserved-or atleast unadulterated-foods will last in warm weather for longer than a month. Requiring foods to be preserved by some means or other would certainly make the game more of a challenge, but would additionally increase the appeal of building a Fortress in an arctic climate, where refridgeration would be simple.

Dry desert climates could also make food preserving easier, since many foods can simply be dried.

Vinegar also prevents scurvy. As do limes, lemons, and other fruits and veggies.

Balsamic vinegar.  Yum!

But I definitely agree about adding vinegar to the game.  I make a lot of home preserves myself, and you can pickle just about anything if you pick it at the right time, and prepare it right.

Pickling/preserving could also add an extras element to seaside fortresses, where that mass of salt water suddenly has a use.  Tinned sardines, anyone?
