Fortress Guard is also known as the Retirement Home.

I don't bother with the fortress guard.
far better to let them die in battle.
Admittedly, five ageing dwarves missing various organs and limbs and kitted out in rusting scrap is hardly scary.
especially if they keep passing out.

Most of my Fortress Guards are missing eyeballs and limbs.  It's so true.  Haha.

I actually employ a functional fortress gaurd. I'll train up my whole army before training up 6 spearmen. Dismantle barracks, put spearmen in Fortress Gaurd.

Well that's what I think you're suppose to do, but I just hire them to make the nobles happy.  Bunch of drunk peasants.

I love the classical idea of a bunch of armsmen just milling about on the wall, when they spot a goblin ambush. They charge out the gates and valiantly slaughter several groundhogs with silver weapons, before their leather armor is turned to shreds by goblin bolts. It's fun.

It's often more like "Ahah, we shall slay the goblins! Oh no, a wild piggie! FLEEE"

Clearly the dwarves are getting confused because groundhogs and goblins look the same.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

'b' is different than 'x' and a Bed doesn't hold back magma as well as a Floodgate no matter how fast you type.

In my fortress, somebody would be sleeping on that bed. Before AND after.
