Tileset gripes

It seems like everyone these days is using tilesets. Warg.

Now, I'm not against people doing something to make the game a bit easier but I have to admit to a spark of irritation when I see screenshots from tilesets. It's like having two different games, and I guess it can make communication between the sides a bit difficult via screenshots.

Also I hate the way tilesets bugger up text with symbols in place of punctuation  >:(

Some of us like it, some of us don't, some of us have to use them due to astigmatism or other optic causes (like me), lets not turn this into a flamefest about tilesets, okay?

It is not a question of sheer loyalty or anything, there is not a 'best' way.

And about the accented letters, Wiki has something to say, after all.

Well, the tilesets have always been a bit of a hot topic, along with the definition of modding recently, so... I'm just sayin' :)

And, yeah, due to my astigmatism, I can't play DF vanilla more than an hour tops. I've been stuck in front of a computer screen since 1992 though, it's not unexpected.

I think the mayday set and all its variations are...not very good. I just don't dig anything about it, it looks hacked together and counter intuitive, and my least favorite thing about it is the horrid, horrid font. No personal offense meant to Capn Mayday at all, and I know tons of people use it and love it, it just definitely isn't for me. I was actually sent the Mayday pack as an intro to DF and quit playing after 10 minutes cause I hated the look. I only really got hooked after getting vanilla and hearing the music for the first time.

One graphics set I do like is Placid's, which has a much more consistent look, and better colors. Kudos to him, I just wish he'd work on a slightly larger square one.

I'm working on a simple tileset for myself (here:http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-5118-fatalrims) and even though I'm not satisfied with it yet, I still prefer the ASCII aesthetic to any convoluted and busy looking character set.

My major gripe with the curses font is the 9x12 size. 1900x1440 screen on my home comp spews characters at me.

However, I agree with one thing - seeing a & is much... terrifying than seeing a graphic version of it.

I am wondering how t ocontact JT from Tileset Depot? He has my tileset up there which I released with Metal mod and has it listed as Unknown author.

Yeah except for the broken cleartype usage - he should have made it on a black background and then filled in pure black only with magenta - instead it's on a magenta background.

As good a time as any to plug my tileset generator, which can do this (including transparent PNGs - in fact, i'll have to fix that, it looks like it currently _only_ supports transparent PNGs, and saves them only with a .bmp extension - wonder why no-one found that bug) with any font at any size. It could still use some work - in particular, there's a bug in the logic for handling of wide characters in proportional fonts (they get squeezed properly, but they get moved too far to the left) and I'd still recommend editing walls by hand or taking them from an existing set.

I'm considering adding code to use drawing fundamentals to draw the wall characters, and maybe also for a dwarf tile with a beard. How many people actually use this?

What, you mean on that page on the wiki? Just edit it. You might need to register.

if you play around with the tilesets yourself you can change whatever you feel like,

Also, im going to try to make a completely custom (no rips :P) tileset, for personal usage, when its done ill post it, none will be ACII, as i find it hard to read, and it should look OK.

There is, sir. You need only edit the tileset in MSPaint, locate the exact 16x16 tile you want to revert (or 8x12 or 14x14 or whatever your tileset is) and paste a suitable default & over it.

If you post your tileset here I'll take a few seconds and make you one with the original & symbol. Alternatively, try out PTTGV5. It's a very simple and functional tileset with drop shadows a nice immersive font, great smoothed walls, etc.

I like PTTGV5.  It has those nice, smooth-cornered walls, and everything else in it has a very . . . smooth look to it, even the font.  It all fits together in ASCII, too, especially when you look at catapults.  They look awesome in that tileset and don't affect anything else to some horrible extent.

My main problem with tilesets is that it's hard to believe a ballista is a ballista when the tiles composing it look like a cobbled street.  Then there's the deal with levers and manta rays . . .

Well, as long as we're talking about tilesets that have a nice finish to them and don't screw up the ASCII graphics, we should really talk about the tileset from Plac1d.

It's hands down my favorite, and you can see it in action in my fort, down there in my sig.
