After all that, start a new game and (before entering the castle, this is crucial) jump onto the top of the castle. There are numerous guides available detailing how to do this. On top of the castle, you should see an orange pipe. Enter it.

You will then be taken to a boos fight with Bowser, but the graphics are all messed up. You must toss him into the mines starting with the one on the opposite side of him and continuing clockwise.

Every time he hits a mine, he gets bigger. Make him so big he blows a hole in the wall when he is pushed.

A star will appear. DO NOT GRAB IT! Instead, look off the side of the map for a tiny ledge. It will barely be visible. Jump off and land on the ledge. There will be a power-up box waiting there.

from there jump as far from where the star is as you can, star should be to your back, from there you will land on an invisible ledge, head left along it, to the right it ends swiftly

There is a hole in the ledge, and it continues left. Fall down this hole. You will lose a life, but do not be discouraged! Do the same thing again.

now on the third time, jump the hole and continue, you will see a painting, jump through it.
